1904 Massachusetts Art Library Map

In 1890 the Library Commission was established in large part due to the advocacy of Elizabeth Putnam Sohier who served 36 years on the Commission and never missed a meeting. She determined that every municipality should have a pubic library and in 14 years, this was accomplished.

As bplboston Summer Reading programs draw to a close, we invite you to make reading a part of your daily practice.
At the time this map was made in 1904, libraries all across Massachusetts had a collective 4,250,000 volumes and annual circulation of about 9,000,000 objects between them.
Today, just the Boston Public Library has more than 23 million items in its collection and circulated around 5.5 million physical and digital items in 2023.
