Lunenburg Library built in '05

I got a tour of the Lunenbury Library constructed in 2005. with an MBLC grant of 1.7 million dollars matched by the town.  It is 15,000 square feet and the architect was J Roberts with whom they are happy.  The Crescent Dancers performance filled the room and people were standing in the back, squished in.

The community room which the town loves and uses, checking it out like a book, is about 25X36 and holds 100 people.  The Trustee I spoke to said it is usually big enough.  Many town events and board meetings are held there.  There is a smaller community room with a large table and 10 chairs.  The “community wing” has bathrooms and a kitchenette which is sometimes too small. (The library has another kitchen near the Librarians break room).  There is a free standing bulletin board inside the library, a bench in the entryway along with a plaque with names of those who bult the library including the Friends board and architect, building committee and trustees.

The children’s room is inspiring with a galaxy theme, younger kids on one side, older on the other.  Drop ceiling in the shape of sun, moon and clouds as well as hanging globe light.  Words on the wall Imagine, Dream, Read (or something like that)  This area has a family bathroom.

There are windows up high so light comes in but does not take away shelf space and there is a grand window on one end like Sunderland, Leverett, Wendell.

There is a garden area which was donated in honor of a local family based on another library’s “secret garden”. Summer events are held there and it is by an emergency exit.

A library should inspire and Lunenburg does.  Terrific director, strong friends board, committed trustees.
